Prosecutor orders probe into freeze of bank merger

Supreme Court prosecutor Nikolaos Pantelis on Friday ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent suspension of a merger between National Bank of Greece and Eurobank.

Pantelis called on Athens prosecutors to launch the investigation following claims by Nikos Stavrogiannis, an MP of the rightwing anti-bailout Independent Greeks, according to which authorities had been aware that the deal would be suspended long before the freeze was announced.

The two banks suspended merger talks on Monday, claiming they were unable to raise the required capital.
