Big weekly gains for bank stocks on recap prospects

Bank stocks on the Greek bourse clocked up impressive gains of 46.5 percent in the week that has just ended thanks to increasing optimism regarding their recapitalization, while the benchmark edged up 3.81 percent over the same period. On a daily basis, the main index headed south on Friday, attributed to investors wishing to cash in on recent gains.

The Athens Exchange general index closed at 962.03 points, 0.92 percent lower than Thursday’s 970.93 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 shed 0.45 percent to end at 321.63 points.

Banks kept growing, with National adding 8.16 percent, but Hellenic Petroleum fell 4.06 percent.

In total 58 stocks posted gains, 84 suffered losses and 24 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 70.5 million euros, down from Thursday’s 82.2 million.
