BoG: Tourism arrivals and travel receipts confirm rise

In terms of tourism, 2013 has already shown a considerable improvement compared to last year, as in January and February the number of visitors to this country came to 661,300, which is 6.9 percent more than in the same period in 2012, according to data released on Monday by the Bank of Greece.

Travel receipts posted a 2.9 percent increase in the first couple of months of the year, compared with the January-February 2012 period. They reached 255.7 million euros.

In February alone, however, the annual increase came to 11.5 percent, while the rise in tourist numbers came to 11.1 percent.

The biggest increase in arrivals in January and February was from the Russian market – up 48 percent to 6,600 tourists. There was also a rise in arrivals from the US (up 12.7 percent to 19,000), Germany (up 2.5 percent to 50,900) and France (up by 7.6 percent to 19,200).

Receipts from Russian visitors soared 68.4 percent to 5.6 million euros.
