Ministry seeking deal to get deposit interest information directly from banks

The Finance Ministry is trying to reach an agreement with banks for them to directly provide details regarding the annual interest customers’ have earned on deposits, the general secretary for revenues Haris Theocharis said on Tuesday.

As of this year, Greeks earning more than 250 euros in interest on their savings will have to declare the amount in their annual tax declaration. The period for submitting them began last week and the deadline, which may be extended, is June 30.

Theocharis said that until there is an agreement with banks for them to provide the information directly to tax service, taxpayers will have to collect the documentation from banks themselves.

Speaking to Mega TV, Theocharis said that 12,000 declarations had been submitted so far.
