PM’s US visit spurs stocks to near 950 pts

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s visit to the White House on Thursday appeared to spur investor confidence in Greek stocks.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index gained 2.46 percent, closing at 948.72 points. Cumulative gains after a streak of seven straight winning sessions amount to 7.24 percent, while gains since the July 15 low this year stand at 18.45 percent.

The large-cap index added 3.10 percent, spearheaded by large trading volumes in National Bank (7.06 percent), Piraeus Bank (2.80 percent), OTE telecom (1.86 percent), Alpha Bank warrants (8.46 percent) and Coca-Cola HBC (5.40 percent).

Turnover topped 48.63 million euros, while winners outnumbered decliners by 79 to 52 and 19 stocks remained unchanged.
