Major banks keep ATHEX upbeat for eighth day in a row

The Greek stock market maintained its recent upward momentum Friday, posting the eighth straight session of gains with the highest volume since this year’s July 15 low.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index advanced 0.87 percent, closing at 956.93 points. The large-cap index added 0.88 percent, spearheaded by strong buying interest in National Bank which accounted for more than one-fifth of total daily volume and added 2.20 percent to close at 2.79 euros. Piraeus Bank surged 3.64 percent to reach 1.14 euros, and OTE telecom showed strength despite reporting weaker profits on Thursday, rising 1.54 percent to 7.24 euros.

Advancers outnumbered decliners by 60 to 46 and volume came to 56.55 million euros.
