Crackdown on gas stations starts with first closures
Development Ministry officials on Wednesday said they have revoked the operating licenses of the first seven gas stations among 1,250 in the regions of Attica and Thessaloniki that have failed to comply with legislation compelling fuel sellers to install a system to montor inflows and outflows.
“The rest of the gas stations will be shut down starting today and will not open again until they comply fully with the legislation,” Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis said.
The ministry also announced Wednesday that heating oil sellers will have until October 15 – when sales begin – to install the inflow-outflow monitoring system or face closure.
The legislation enforcing new monitoring technology is meant to curb tax evasion and the illegal trade in fuel, though an electronic system for processing data from audits at gas stations will not be in operation for at least another week, the ministry said.
