Investors cash in on day’s gains by the end of trading

The heights of 1,150 points proved too dizzying for Athens bourse’s benchmark index to maintain, forcing it to shed virtually all of the day’s considerable gains by the end of Tuesday’s trading.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,119.99 points, adding 0.06 percent to Monday’s 1,119.36 points, although in the early afternoon it had climbed as high as 1,153 points.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted by 0.30 percent to end at 371.57 points, but the mid-cap index posted a 1.82 percent increase.

Blue chips presented a mixed picture, with National Bank expanding by 4.84 percent and Hellenic Exchanges growing by 4.48 percent, while METKA fell by 4.81 percent and Jumbo declined by 4.30 percent.

In total, 90 stocks registered gains, 54 showed losses and 24 stayed put.

Turnover climbed to 173.2 million euros from Monday’s 160 million.
