More than 100,000 new debtors arise
October saw the addition of more than 100,000 taxpayers to the list of those with outstanding debts to the state due to their inability to pay taxes and fines adding up to 381 million euros.
A total of 3,182,477 debtors, including the 101,425 created in October, owe tax authorities the sum of 62.88 billion euros, although that number includes people who have died, enterprises that have gone bankrupt and state companies (which owe the most to tax authorities).
Out of the nearly 63 billion euros, nearly two-thirds, or 39.89 billion euros, are the debts of corporations, with the remaining 22.98 billion euros being owed by taxpayers. Some 43 billion euros of that is considered uncollectable and will be archived in a special folder to be written off in 10 years’ time.
According to Finance Ministry data covering the period from the start of the year until October 31, taxpayers and firms entered special payment programs for debts adding up to 1.5 billion euros. Tax collection in the first 10 months of the year came in 191 million euros short of the target, while value-added tax revenues beat the target by 2.3 percent in the same period.
