Second tranche of heating oil subsidy due to be paid out on Tuesday

Homeowners who have applied to receive heating oil subsidies are likely to receive the second instalment on Tuesday, Greece’s general secretary for revenues Haris Theocharis revealed on Monday.

Responding to a question via Twitter on Monday, Theocharis said that the matter is in the hands of the banks which have to make the payments.

A total of 560,000 households applied for the subsidy, with 480,000 of the applications being approved. So far, 22 million euros has been paid out to successful applicants.

On Sunday, the Health Ministry warned the elderly and asthma sufferers that smog levels in Athens and other urban areas were at dangerous levels due to weather conditions and the high number of people burning wood to stay warm.

The ministry warned that people over the age of 65 should limit their physical activity and that asthma sufferers might need to use their inhalers more frequently because of the smog.

The Health and Environment ministries had issued a statement on Saturday night asking households to limit the use of fireplaces to prevent the build up of smog.
