Plan to open downtown Athens stores until 11 p.m. on Saturday meets opposition

Retail stores in Athens are due to stay open until 11 p.m. on Saturday in conjunction with a series of events organized in the city center by the municipality.

The City of Athens has programmed a series of musical and family events from 5 p.m. until around 11 p.m. The Numismatic Museum, the Folk Art Museum and the Museum of Greek Folk instruments will also be open until 11 p.m. as part of the “White Night” event.

However, the proposal to open stores until 11 p.m. has met with the disapproval of the union representing store employees, which called the proposal “unethical,” arguing that some shop staff had suffered big wage cuts and were not being paid on time.
