Bourse index expands by almost 5 pct as investors close books

Friday’s bourse session proved worth the three-day-recess wait, as stocks enjoyed major gains with investors trying to improve the year-end picture.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index enjoyed its third-highest daily rise in 2013 as it closed at 1,165.24 points, adding 4.78 percent to Monday’s 1,112.08 points. Its weekly gains amounted to 3.68 percent.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded 4.76 percent to end at 386.24 points.

Alpha fared best, adding 8.81 percent, and GEK Terna rose by 8.77 percent. The only blue chip to post a loss was Terna Energy (down 2.51 percent).

In total 106 stocks went up, 37 came down and 27 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 109.7 million euros, down from Monday’s 155.6 million.
