Applications from households for inclusion in the list for the Social Household Power Rates have been soaring in the last week since the start of a TV advertising campaign by the Public Power Corporation (PPC).
Official PPC data show that the rate of new applications have grown from 80 to 100 per day to about 3,500, totaling about 20,000 in the last week. This means that the number of households enjoying the lower rates will soon exceed 500,000, from about 470,000 today. PPC’s original estimates had been for 1 million households.
Furthermore, PPC has restored the electricity supply to about 7,000 poor consumers since mid-December, with authorized electricians restoring more connections to reach an estimated 10,000-15,000 poor households, according to Energy Minister Yiannis Maniatis, which will be reconnected by next weekend.
