Stock index fails to lock in early gains

The early gains quickly evaporated for most stocks on the Greek bourse on Thursday, with the session ending with a drop of almost 1 percent for the benchmark index.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,271.31 points, shedding 0.97 percent from Wednesday’s 1,283.70 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted by 1 percent to 417.76 points.

Banks, construction firms and energy blue chips headed south, with Alpha falling 3.30 percent and National declining by 1.20, while Terna Energy shrank by 3.11 percent, GEK Terna gave up 3.10 percent, and Ellaktor slumped 3.09 percent. EYDAP added 2.68 percent and Hellenic Exchanges rose 1.84 percent.

In total 55 stocks posted gains, 85 saw losses and 19 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 102.2 million euros, down from Wednesday’s 113.4 million.
