Index rises for 8th day thanks to smaller caps
Smaller stocks powered the Athens bourse’s benchmark index higher on Monday, as banks and utilities took a back seat for the most part, something which also resulted in lower turnover during the first session of the week.
The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,260.17 points, adding 0.43 percent to Friday’s 1,254.75 points. Over the course of the day it had posted gains of over 1 percent.
The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded 0.29 percent to 411.25 points, while mid-caps outperformed, adding 1 percent.
It was the eighth consecutive session of growth for the main index, a sequence unseen since last August. Total gains during this period have added up to 11.88 percent.
Frigoglass was the blue chip that fared best, adding 7.27 percent, followed by Ellaktor (up 4.29 percent) and GEK Terna (2.87 percent). The biggest losers were Corinth Pipeworks (down 2.03 percent) and Titan Cement (1.33 percent).
In total 68 stocks recorded gains, 62 sustained losses and 29 remained unchanged.
Turnover amounted to 68.3 million euros, down from last Friday’s 77.9 million.
