Small decline in jobless rate in December

Unemployment in Greece posted a minor monthly decline in December 2013, reaching 27.5 percent, against 27.6 percent in November, Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data showed on Thursday.

The total number of unemployed came to 1,349,495 at the end of December, for an overall rate of 27.3 percent for the whole of 2013, constituting a drop of 10,864 people from November, but also a rise of 48,551 people from December 2013, when the jobless rate had stood at 26.3 percent.

Young people and women continue to suffer the most in terms of unemployment: The unemployment rate among Greeks aged between 15 and 24 was 55.5 percent in December 2013, although that was smaller than a year earlier: In December 2012, the figure had stood at 57.1 percent. The jobless rate for women was 31.6 percent, while 24.5 percent of men were unemployed.
