Bourse index edges higher as investors focus on banks

Most of the trade during Wednesday’s bourse session in Athens was focused on banks Alpha and Piraeus, with the former adding over 4 percent and the latter shedding almost 6 percent on a day of moderate gains for the main index with a significant rise in turnover.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,331.96 points, up 0.21 percent from Monday’s 1,329.20 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded 0.31 percent to 429.85 points.

Alpha climbed 4.29 percent and Piraeus contracted by 5.94 percent. Titan Cement outperformed with growth of 4.35 percent. Eurobank Properties declined by 3.30 percent.

In total, 81 stocks posted gains, 64 suffered losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover soared to 169.9 million euros from Monday’s 71.3 million, while there was also major trading in bank warrants.
