Bourse index adjusts to new heights

The stock market in Athens had on Thursday the necessary session for the cashing in of recent gains, with the index flirting with a 2 percent decline about an hour before closing, only to contain its losses at the closing auctions.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,314.99 points, shedding 1.27 percent from Wednesday’s 1,331.96 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted 1.31 percent to 424.20 points, although small-caps enjoyed a 0.48 percent increase.

Just two blue chips headed northward, as Marfin Investment Group added 2.04 percent and OTE telecom expanded 0.41 percent. Leading losers were EYDAP (down 3.90 percent), Frigoglass (3.56 percent) and Piraeus Bank (3.16 percent).

In total, 48 stocks showed gains, 89 posted losses and 20 stayed unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 122 million euros, down from Wednesday’s 169.9 million.
