Expectations that tourism arrivals from abroad will soar this year are supported by the first statistics for May concerning four of Greece’s main regional airports that Kathimerini has seen.
Rhodes Airport (pictured) enjoyed an 11.4 percent increase in visitors from abroad compared to last May, reaching 237,873, partly thanks to the 33 percent jump in arrivals from Germany.
Corfu witnessed an 11.3 percent rise in foreign arrivals, to 121,306, boosted by growth from the British and German markets.
Iraklio on Crete recorded a 6.5 percent annual increase, with most visitors traveling from Germany, Russia and Great Britain.
Meanwhile Cephalonia shook off the effects of the earthquakes that jolted it earlier this year, recording a marginal rise of 0.4 percent in May, largely thanks to a 9.4 percent increase in visitors from the UK.
