Vouchers for purchase of computers
The government announced on Wednesday that it plans to start handing out vouchers to people on low incomes to purchase computers and pay for Internet connections.
The Infrastructure Ministry’s new initiative, titled “Digital Solidarity,” constitutes an attempt to absorb resources from the European Union-funded “Digital Convergence” program before they are lost.
The recipients of the social dividend (the social groups entitled to a share of the 2013 budget’s primary surplus) will also be entitled to a Digital Solidarity voucher worth some 500 euros, of which 250 euros can be used for the purchase of a computer or a tablet, 150 euros for a 12-month Internet connection, while the remaining 100 euros is to be spent on a package of six to eight training sessions on the latest in information technology and communications.
According to calculations by the ministry and those managing the Digital Convergence program, Greece will have 80 to 100 million euros left at the end of 2015, and the ministry will start to distribute the above vouchers in order not to miss out on these resources.
