Mid-caps and OPAP prop up benchmark

Rising stocks outnumbered those heading south on the local bourse on Thursday while the benchmark ended up virtually unchanged as early losses were offset by gains, mostly secured by outperforming mid-caps, as well as the OPAP gaming company, which is expected to profit on the World Cup that just started in Brazil.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,307.08 points, shedding just 0.01 percent from Wednesday’s 1,307.26 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 25 added 0.01 percent to close at 423 points, while the mid-cap index expanded 1.56 percent.

OPAP rose 2.49 percent, outdone only by Marfin Investment Group (up 5.64 percent) and Hellenic Petroleum (4.74 percent). Titan Cement contracted 3.75 percent.

In total 72 stocks recorded gains, 53 took losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 134.7 million euros, down from Wednesday’s 258.2 million.
