Piraeus Port processes record number of containers in July

A record number of containers were processed in July at Terminal 1, which is run by the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP), it emerged on Monday.

A total of 50,517 containers were handled, which is the most during a single month in OLP’s history. Management also revealed that productivity at Terminal 1 has increased by about 40 percent since 2009, with 161 containers now being processed each shift rather than 115.

The data were provided to journalists as the MSC London arrived at the port. It is the largest cargo ship to have docked in Piraeus, measuring 399 meters in length and with the capacity to carry 16,652 containers.

Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis visited the port and said that Piraeus, where Chinese firm COSCO operates container handling terminals 2 and 3, now has the ability to compete with the best ports in the Mediterranean.
