End auctions take edge off day’s stock losses

The local bourse’s weekly losses came to a painful 5.41 percent at the end of Friday’s session, when the benchmark spent most of the day in the red but managed to redeem itself slightly thanks to a strong showing by buyers in the closing auctions.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 1,086.50 points, shedding 0.14 percent from Thursday’s 1,087.98 points.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index posted a marginal increase of 0.06 percent, closing at 352.57 points, thanks to the 0.45 percent rise of the banks index. However the mid-cap index slid 1.91 percent.

Piraeus Bank outperformed among the blue chips with a 3.17 percent rise, while Marfin Investment Group contracted by 5.36 percent.

In total 54 stocks took gains, 72 had losses and 13 ended unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 79.7 million euros, down from Thursday’s 117.5 million.
