Bitter tidings for sugar industry workers

Hellenic Sugar Industry workers were chagrined to discover that the firm, currently in resolution, has stopped paying their salaries following an administrative decision.

The head of the industry’s union, Christodoulos Varkakis said “we went to the bank to get our salaries and there was not a single euro for us.” He added that the administrator cited debts of 18 million euros to sugarcane producers as the reason.

The head of the Central Macedonia Sugarcane Producers, Pavlos Boyiannidis, said the Agriculture Ministry and the industry’s administrator have pledged that repayments will start for the year’s produce, amounting to 523,000 tons, in the first half of this month.
