Volatile stock session sees index grow

Mixed reactions in Europe to a Greek demand for an extension to its bailout framework submitted on Thursday resulted in increased volatility in the local stock market, but buyers kept the upper hand at the end of the day.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 856.50 points, adding 1.06 percent to Wednesday’s 847.53 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index expanded 1.33 percent to end at 254.07 points.

National Bank outperformed with gains of 7.14 percent, ahead of Alpha Bank (up 6.41 percent), Piraeus Port Authority (5.17 percent) and Marfin Investment Group (4.60 percent). Jumbo gave up 4.16 percent and Motor Oil contracted 2.78 percent.

In total 85 stocks grew, 34 shrank and 23 stayed put.

Turnover came to 267.2 million euros, twice as high as Wednesday’s 131.8 million.
