Losses for bank stocks while PPC adds 9 pct

The impressive gains in Tuesday’s bourse session were followed on Wednesday by a significant decline for banks and a mixed day for other stocks, on reduced turnover.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 923.03 points, shedding 1.59 percent from Tuesday’s 937.96 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index contracted 2.97 percent to end at 273.01 points, although mid-caps enjoyed gains of 1.03 percent.

Banks slumped 9.45 percent as Piraeus Bank fell 13.13 percent, National lost 11.31 percent and Eurobank dropped 8.62 percent. Public Power Corporation soared 9.01 percent. In total 48 stocks expanded, 84 declined and 24 ended unchanged.

Turnover reached 159.8 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 246.4 million.
