End of shows for Village Roadshow?

Australia’s entertainment group Village Roadshow, which operates 44 multiplex cinema screens in Athens and Thessaloniki, is considering withdrawing from Greece, unconfirmed reports said. The group recently signed a memorandum with construction firm Themeliodomi for leasing space for one more five-screen facility in Kavala for 18 years, after announcing similar plans for two complexes in the Olympic media village in Maroussi and in Thessaloniki’s Pylaia mall, in partnership with real estate firm Lamda Development. However, the group has been reducing its international operations since 2000 as part of a plan to improve profitability and has withdrawn from Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Switzerland, Hungary, France and the UK. Its website states its intention to restrict activities to «eight to 10» areas in the world. Greece is among Europe’s laggards in the number of multiplex cinemas, the leaders being UK and Belgium.
