AIA registers new passenger record

More than 6 million passengers passed through Athens International Airport in the January-May 2015 period, according to data it released yesterday, the highest number since it started operating.

The rise continued last month as it amounted to 22.3 percent compared with May 2014, reaching 1.65 million passengers. Most of them (1.07 million) were passengers on international flights, while the remaining 581,000 were traveling on domestic routes. The number of Greek travelers increased by 15 percent, while foreign passengers rose by an impressive 28 percent year-on-year.

In the first five months of 2015, passengers at the capital’s Eleftherios Venizelos Airport amounted to 6.09 million, posting a 23.7 percent increase from the same period last year. There was a remarkable 28.2 percent rise in domestic flight passengers, who amounted to 2.22 million. Travelers on international flights increased 21.2 percent to reach 3.86 million.

The main reason for the increase in passenger numbers is the rise in total flights as flights to and from Athens in the year to end-May grew by 17.1 percent on an annual basis to reach 61,950. International flights numbered 35,450 (up 20.7 percent) and domestic flights grew 12.6 percent, amounting to almost 26,500.
