Lafazanis blasts EU energy policy

Production Reconstruction and Energy Minister Panayiotis Lafazanis accused on Monday the European Commission of the selective application of European legislation regarding projects for the diversification of energy sources, suppliers and routes.

Addressing the council of European Union ministers in Luxembourg, Lafazanis spoke in favor of strong state intervention and public rules at a time when the Commission is heading in the direction of a single European market with limited national powers. He also put forward the issues of combating energy inequalities and energy poverty.

Without specifically referring to the Moscow-backed TurkStream gas pipeline, Lafazanis criticized Brussels’s decision to get involved with national deals in advance and indirectly expressed the SYRIZA-led government’s support of the project and its readiness to sign an agreement for the pipeline’s passage through Greek territory.
