ATHEX: Index gains of 3 pct prove ephemeral

The Greek bourse greeted the news that Athens had sent a new compromise proposal to the country’s creditors with a temporary 3 percent rise in the benchmark on Tuesday, but the three-page document’s reportedly cool reception from Brussels contained the gains to just 0.62 percent at the end of the day. Trading volume remained at low levels.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index did manage to put an end to its three-day decline, closing at 769.37 points, against Monday’s 764.63 points.

The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 index expanded 0.58 percent to close at 230.47 points, while mid-caps added 1.53 percent.

At one point during the session the entire set of 25 blue chips was posting gains, but the final picture was much more balanced. Alpha Bank advanced 5.26 percent and Motor Oil climbed 4.27 percent, while METKA and Public Power Corporation rose 3.04 percent.

EYDAP declined 4.66 percent, GEK Terna lost 4.05 percent and Terna Energy gave up 2.24 percent.

In total 71 stocks reported gains, 45 sustained losses and 21 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 66.8 million euros, up from Monday’s 46.5 million.
