ATHEX: Stocks rise but turnover drops

The benchmark of the Greek stock market ended at the day’s high on Monday with small gains for the majority of stocks. However, the very low trading volume does not bode at all well in the short term, partly due to the fatigue observed on the banks front.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 680.75 points, adding 0.56 percent to Friday’s 676.93 points.

The large-cap FTSE 25 index expanded 0.85 percent to end at 202.51 points, but mid-caps fell 0.22 percent and small-caps gave up 1.92 percent.

The banks index posted a loss of 2.71 percent at the end of the session, with Piraeus Bank falling 4 percent and National Bank sliding 3.33 percent.

Ellaktor gave up 3.91 percent, while Grivalia Properties advanced 3.26 percent, Titan Cement expanded 2.95 percent and Public Power Corporation increased 2.82 percent.

In total 42 stocks posted gains, 37 recorded losses and 14 closed unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 25.3 million euros, down from last Friday’s 26.6 million.
