Road tax payment deadline unlikely to be extended

A senior Finance Ministry official has said there is no reason to extend the deadline for the payment of road tax for 2016, which is on Thursday, unless there was a last-minute technical glitch.

In any case, the final decision on the matter will be taken this morning, after the minister is informed about the course of payment.

Despite the fairly late start to the payment period this year, eight in 10 vehicle owners had paid the tax by Tuesday, likely because the process via the ministry’s online system has been made easier and users have become more familiar with it.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of owners have submitted their registration plates to avoid having to pay the tax.
