Big changes in pipeline for highway tolls

An Infrastructure Ministry amendment to a bill on state cooperation with Iraq on Thursday is expected to lead to major changes in the calculation of highway toll charges. The new law creates a single framework for the application of a system of electronic tolls with charges proportionate to the distance vehicles cover on highways.

A new, autonomous agency for tolls will be created, answering only to the minister. The Toll Electronic Management Agency will undertake the development and operation of a new electronic system for the management, monitoring and charging of tolls, the management of the existing toll monitoring center, the creation of single standards for electronic tolls, and the monitoring and payment of revenues.

However, it is not clear whether the law will immediately affect toll charges on the Egnatia Highway that runs across northern Greece too, as that would likely lead to problems in its privatization process.
