Used car imports soared 47 percent in September

Imports of used cars are taking an ever bigger share in the domestic market, while new car sales are constantly slowing down.

September figures by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) showed on Monday that out of the 9,044 cars registered for the first time, 4,030 were used imports.

Overall registrations increased by 9.6 percent year-on-year, as used imports soared 47.1 percent, while new cars shrank 9 percent from September 2015.

Industry experts attribute this to uncontrolled imports – some of them with tampered mileage – and favorable taxes.
