Many retailers to take part in Black Friday

One after another, Greece’s retail chains and traders’ associations are announcing their participation in November 25's “Black Friday” discount event, named after its US counterpart the day after Thanksgiving. In fact, some businesses are extending the sales window, starting today and continuing until Saturday.

Even the Athens Traders Association, a number of whose board members had expressed strong opposition to a Black Friday initiative, rushed to inform its members planning to participate about what the legislation allows for. Its Piraeus peer encouraged members to take part, saying in a letter that the event aims at “reinvigorating purchases ahead of Christmas, as it allows consumers to participate in unique offers.”

Among the chains to have announced their participation are the River West, Athens Metro Mall, McArthurGlen and Smart Park shopping malls, as well as Public, Media Markt, Plaisio etc.

However, prospects of a Black Friday provoked a strong reaction from the Federation of Private Employees of Greece (OIYE), which referred in a statement to a “Black Friday for workers, consumers and commerce.”

The legislation provides for special offers to amount to up to 50 percent of the normal price of merchandise, while stores can stay open no later than 9 p.m.
