Agricultural exports expanded 7.6 percent last year

The trade balance for agricultural products showed a marked improvement last year, with a significant 7.6 percent increase in exports compared to 2015 while imports showed a smaller 4.9 percent expansion, data showed on Friday.

This brought the trade deficit in this category down from 588 million euros in 2015 to 476 million in 2016.

The two major categories of olive oil products and fruit and vegetables each managed to exceed an export turnover of 1 billion euros last year.

However, the country remains unable to cover its needs in commodities such as sugar, fish, beef and pork.
