SMEs turn in favor of Black Friday

Small and medium-sized enterprises look set this year to claim their slice of the Black Friday sales pie. The recent addition to the local retail calendar – which traditionally takes place the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday – is this year scheduled for November 24.

The unofficial shopping holiday met with unexpected success last year, with long queues forming outside stores (mainly those of major chains), which appears to have convinced even the most reserved of traders.

The Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Enterprises (ESEE) issued a circular with guidelines to its member-enterprises saying: “Given that this promotional action was last year conducted primarily by multinationals, we believe that we should not leave the field open only for the big players, but reserve it also for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. In this context ESEE seeks our participation in Black Friday, and it is up to you to judge and assess the conditions in your area.”

Similarly the head of the Thessaloniki Traders’ Association, Pantelis Filippidis, called on SMEs to take part so as “not to leave any space” for the multinational retail chains.

Last year, many SMEs decided to participate in the Black Friday sales at the last minute, without any advertising or stock preparation.
