Bulgaria to ‘get on the map of European organic agriculture’
SOFIA (Reuters) – Bulgaria plans to spend some 312 million euros on developing organic farming on 8 percent of its arable land through 2013, the Agriculture Ministry said yesterday. «Bulgaria will work to get on the map of European organic agriculture. The demand for organic food keeps rising,» Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil said. He said the Balkan country will fund research and boost certification for organic farming as 80 percent of its 3.8 million hectares of arable land was potentially suitable for producing bio products. So far, Sofia has certified only 3,000 hectares for organic production on which farmers produce herbs, honey, rose oil, tomatoes and cucumbers and export them mainly to Germany, the Netherlands, France, the USA and Switzerland.
