Ankara puts off its 3G tender

ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey’s telecommunications regulator has postponed to Sept 7 a tender for four third-generation phone licenses, an official from the communications ministry said yesterday. Bids had been due by tomorrow, and the tender was scheduled for Friday. The communications ministry official gave no reason for the delay, but other officials put it down to general elections, which have been brought forward to July from November amid a political crisis. Turkey’s leading mobile operator Turkcell had said it would bid and has already sent out tender documents for 3G infrastructure. Shares in Turkcell closed the first session up 1.9 percent, rising more than twice as much as the main index.
