Tourism helps stricken areas
The Tourism Development Ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) yesterday announced a package of 12 measures in support of hotel enterprises in fire-stricken areas of the country. The measures include an additional advertising campaign in the mass media of the US, the UK, Germany and France, the payment by GNTO of the cost of the stricken areas participating in tourism fairs abroad, as well as a special economic injection for prefectural and municipal tourism authorities, as well as local hoteliers’ associations. GNTO will also cover the cost of people participating in «social tourism» programs at the accommodation facilities of the badly hit areas, while a special program in support of winter tourism in these regions will be drafted in cooperation with the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers (POX). Specialized GNTO personnel, including engineers and architects, will prepare studies and partially implement programs for the environmental regeneration of the devastated prefectures. The measures were announced in Sparta after GNTO General Secretary Athanasios Economou met with representatives of POX and the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.
