The ministers of economy, Giorgos Alogoskoufis (right), and of development, Christos Folias, speaking to reporters yesterday after a meeting of the Inner Cabinet to discuss measures to stem a wave of retail price increases. These are not expected before the end of the winter sales period at the end of February but the government also plans to intensify cost checks and bolster the role of consumer associations and the Competition Commission. ‘Any would-be speculators had better reconsider. The long arm of speculation will be cut off,’ said Folias.
