Construction carries index over 2,400 pts

Refinery group Hellenic Petroleum slid 2.13 percent yesterday as investors took gains and focus shifted to construction stocks, recent laggards, which ticked up 2.79 percent. Hellenic Petroleum landed at 6.44 euros while the Athens benchmark general index advanced 0.53 percent to recapture the 2,400-point mark for the first time in almost two months, closing at 2,402.07 points. «Hellenic Petroleum corrected, which is a logical move after the stock gained around 12 percent recently,» said analyst Manos Hatzidakis at Magna Trust. Blue chips on the bourse’s FTSE/ASE-20 index rose 0.55 percent to 1,264.99 points, with telecom stocks up 0.31 percent. Mid-caps rose 0.85 percent and small-caps ended up 0.88 percent. The construction index rose 2.79 percent. Turnover was 127.43 million euros on volume of 29 million shares. Winners beat losers 205 to 110 while 47 shares were unchanged on 362 traded.
