Property registry fee ‘unfair’

Consumer group INKA threatened yesterday to take Ktimatologio, the state company in charge of the country’s first land registry, to court over what is says is unfair treatment of home owners. INKA called for a 35-euro charge imposed by Ktimatologio on home owners to be revoked. «The unfair treatment of citizens who are being told to pay 35 euros for a 50-square-meter apartment or a 500-square-meter property is unconstitutional,» said the group. The registration procedure costs 35 euros for each property and an additional 20 euros for any other facilities, such as separate storage rooms or parking bays. Some 3 million Greeks are expected to take part in the registration process which began in 1995 and is not expected to be completed until 2020. People living abroad who own properties in Athens have until December 30, 2008, while locals should complete the registration procedure by the end of this September.
