Steep losses for Greek equities

Greek stocks shed 4.4 percent yesterday on widespread losses as the market tracked European bourses lower, brokers said. The benchmark general index ended at 3,286.83 points, failing to hold the 3,300-point support level. Shares in some of the country’s largest companies, including Public Power Corporation (PPC) and Mytilineos, lost between 9 and 10 percent. Banks shed 5.30 percent while Alpha Bank, the country’s third-largest lender, ended at 18 euros, off 6.25 percent for the day. Of the 280 shares traded, 23 ended with gains, 228 finished in the red and 29 were unchanged. Turnover reached 286 million euros versus 282 million euros in the previous session.
