Ties with Austria ‘excellent’

President Karolos Papoulias yesterday praised the excellent cooperation between Greece and Austria and the particularly positive prospects for reciprocal investment by the two countries. Addressing the Greek-Austrian Business Forum at the Economic Chamber in Vienna, Papoulias said that the emergence of Greece as an energy hub is facilitating cooperation with Austria in this sector. Greece is also the ideal point of entry to the Balkans, with 3,500 Greek companies established in the region. He added that as a popular tourism destination, Greece welcomes a considerable number of Austrians every year, keeping Austria firmly in the top 10 of countries of origin for visitors to Greece. His Austrian counterpart, Heinz Fischer, said that over 600,000 of his compatriots visited Greece in 2007, so «bearing in mind the population of Austria, one can say that Greece is the most popular holiday destination for Austrians.»
