Faster surfing on smaller islands

Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis (right) at an Athens port from which technicians departed yesterday to install Internet access by satellite on some of the country’s smaller islands, including Donousa, Irakleia, Schinousa and Kinaros. The move will provide local residents with fast Internet connections, the minister said. According to data released by the European Commission earlier this year, broadband penetration in Greece jumped to 9 percent in January (i.e. nine active broadband lines per 100 inhabitants) from around 4 percent a year earlier, but it still lags behind the EU average, which stands at 20 percent.
