Thessaloniki port ready for changes

Thessaloniki Port Authority, the operator of Greece’s second-largest port, named a joint venture of Hutchison Port Holdings, HPI Sarl and Alapis Holding SA as the final provisional winner of a tender to run container operations at the harbor. Industry sources believe the privatization of the cargo handling services will help boost the port’s development prospects and help turn Thessaloniki into a transport hub in the wider region. ‘It is believed that Greek ports, which are included in the global port management system, are able to improve their international competitiveness, which will give them a larger share of the increasing number of containers being moved,’ said a Merchant Marine Ministry source.
