Private, public sectors call for strike action
Yiannis Panagopoulos, president of Greece’s largest private sector union group (GSEE), during a meeting yesterday. The group, which represents about two million private sector workers, decided to call a 24-hour strike for December 10. GSEE will be joined by public sector worker group ADEDY during the strike, expected to bring Athens to a standstill, as unions call for government measures in support of workers and pensioners. The conservative government, which recently unveiled a 28-billion-euro bailout plan for banks, was expected to announce measures in support of the unemployed and low income earners about 10 days ago but has yet to make any announcement.
