Cabinet passes RES land zoning plan
Environment Minister Giorgos Souflias (right) chats with Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos (center) after a cabinet meeting in Athens yesterday which approved a land zoning plan for the development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Souflias described the step as important for the promotion of green energy in Greece, enabling the country to reduce its reliance on conventional resources, such as lignite, which is used to produce electricity. The plan will reduce bureaucratic procedures and pave the way for investment activity, according to Souflias. Despite being one of the European Union’s windiest and sunniest countries, Greece trails well behind its EU partners in the production of energy from renewable sources.
