Imported news bolsters stocks

The new measures planned in the US and Europe to boost the economy along with the US state support for Citibank generated positive sentiment across world markets yesterday that resulted in some gains for Greek stocks, too. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,864.81 points yesterday, rising by 2.10 percent from last Friday. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index posted a daily increase of 2.08 percent, ending at 968.53 points. Viohalco outperformed among blue chips with its 9.73 percent daily rise, followed by Titan cement (up 6.60 percent), National Bank (6.24 percent), Public Power Corporation (4.71 percent) and Hellenic Petroleum (3.70 percent). The biggest losses were for Bank of Cyprus (down 3.89 percent), EFG Eurobank (2.46 percent) and Intralot (2.01 percent). Turnover reached a meager 139 million euros.
